How to Use This Brick Calculator

Step 1: Measure Your Wall

Measure the total length and height of the wall in metres. For walls with openings (doors, windows, gates), measure the full wall area first, then subtract the opening area. For example, a 5m × 1.2m wall with a 1m × 1m gate opening = 6m² − 1m² = 5m².

Step 2: Choose Wall Thickness

Single skin (half-brick) walls are 102.5mm thick and suitable for garden walls up to about 1.2m high. For anything taller, or for retaining walls, a double skin (one-brick, 215mm thick) wall is required for structural stability. Always check with a structural engineer for walls over 1.8m.

Step 3: Enter Your Brick Price

The default price of £0.80 per brick reflects a standard facing brick in 2026. If you have a quote from a supplier, enter that price here for an accurate cost estimate. Engineering bricks typically cost £1.00–£1.40 each. Reclaimed bricks vary widely from £0.80 to £1.50+ depending on type and region.

Step 4: Mortar Calculation

This calculator uses a standard 4:1 soft sand to cement ratio and assumes approximately 1.2kg of mortar per brick. Sand bags are priced at £2.50 per 25kg bag and cement at £7.00 per 25kg bag — 2026 UK averages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks are in a square metre?
For a standard UK brick (215 × 102.5 × 65mm) laid in a stretcher bond with a 10mm mortar joint, you need approximately 60 bricks per square metre for a single skin (half-brick) wall. For a double skin (one-brick) wall, you need approximately 120 bricks per square metre.
What is the standard size of a UK house brick?
The standard UK house brick measures 215mm long × 102.5mm wide × 65mm tall. With a standard 10mm mortar joint, the coordinating size (including mortar) is 225 × 112.5 × 75mm. This is the size used in all UK brick quantity calculations.
How much mortar do I need per 1000 bricks?
For every 1,000 standard UK bricks, you need approximately 1.2 cubic metres of mortar, or roughly 1,200kg of dry mortar mix. Using a standard 4:1 sand-to-cement ratio, this equates to approximately 960kg of sand (around 40 × 25kg bags) and 240kg of cement (around 10 × 25kg bags).
What is the difference between single skin and double skin walls?
A single skin wall (half-brick wall) is one brick wide — 102.5mm thick. It is suitable for garden walls, boundary walls, and non-load-bearing internal walls. A double skin wall (one-brick wall) is two bricks wide — 215mm thick. It is used for load-bearing walls, retaining walls, and external house walls that require structural strength.
What is the best mortar mix ratio for bricklaying?
For most general brickwork, a 4:1 mix (4 parts soft sand to 1 part cement) is standard. For harder engineering bricks or below-ground work, use a stronger 3:1 mix. For internal non-load-bearing walls, a weaker 6:1 mix is acceptable. Never use sharp sand (concreting sand) for bricklaying — always use soft building sand.
How many bricks can a bricklayer lay in a day?
An experienced bricklayer can lay approximately 300–500 bricks per day on straightforward work. For complex work with many cuts, corners, or decorative bonds, this can drop to 150–250 per day. As a rough guide, budget for 1 day of labour per 300 bricks when getting quotes.
